the mind that bends 2018 — paige northwood

The mind that bends is a philosophical and experiential exploration into expanded states of perception, consciousness and embodied awareness. The exhibition considers the fluid relationship between mind, body and reality, questioning the ways in which perception shapes our experience of the world. Inspired by the possibility of seeing beyond habitual patterns of thought, the works investigate moments in which the boundaries between self, time and environment begin to dissolve.

Central to the exhibition is an exploration of the state of flow—a heightened state of presence in which action, awareness and intuition become deeply interconnected. Within this state, the distinction between the maker and the act of making begins to recede; attention becomes fully absorbed, and the experience of time is altered. For Northwood, the processes of coiling, extruding and carving become meditative gestures through which this state of heightened awareness is accessed. The works are not simply the result of this process, but records of a particular state of consciousness—material traces of immersion, repetition and presence.

The hand-built vessels and wall works are created in stoneware and high-temperature gas fired, resulting in fully vitrified forms that embody both strength and transformation. Their surfaces and colours are informed by the artist’s surroundings on the south coast of New South Wales, reflecting the shifting tones, textures and atmospheres of the coastal landscape. Material becomes a conduit between internal and external experience, carrying traces of both place and perception.

Throughout the exhibition, Northwood explores the instability of what is considered real, drawing upon philosophical ideas surrounding perception and awareness. Referencing the iconic scene from The Matrix in which the illusion of the spoon is questioned, the distorted clay forms become meditations on the nature of reality itself. The bending of the spoon becomes less a physical transformation than a metaphor for the transformation of perception—the recognition that what shifts is not necessarily the world around us, but the way we encounter it.

The mind that bends proposes creativity as a threshold between conscious intention and intuitive emergence. Through material, repetition and sustained attention, the works invite an encounter with expanded ways of seeing, suggesting that perception is not fixed, but continually shaped by awareness, experience and the willingness to look beyond the familiar.
