Northwood’s fifth solo exhibition, Love and Fear, explores themes of life, death and rebirth along with the notions and learnings that come with living remotely. Delving into the artist’s internal felt frequencies of love and fear in relation to the current global climate, these six new paintings see Northwood further investigate the visceral connection between nature, place and the body. Responding to the recent east coast bushfires and the global pandemic, Love and Fear interrogates universal feelings of uncertainty/anxiety versus compassion/empathy, and asks what is needed in order to heal and prevail; together. Northwood navigates this concept in her tactile and dynamic abstract paintings, which in hindsight she describes as “both inner and outer landscapes” — reflective not only of her own experiences but our collective experiences at large.
